Socks with your own dog photo — this isn't a fashion trend or a gimmick. Dog people want their dog everywhere, and socks are the last thing a customer takes off in the evening before bed. A gift that works on first sight and gets worn every day.

Brief

B2C product: customer uploads a photo of their dog, we make one specific sock with that photo. Three key requirements:

  • Photorealistic detail — the dog must be recognisable. No stylisation, no "looks similar". Face, fur, eyes exactly as in the original photo.
  • Print durability — a £25 gift that fades after two washes is a problem. The print must survive a season.
  • Single-pair delivery — no minimum 50 units. B2C order = one pair, ships home to the customer.

What we did

Your photo — socks with a dog photo, sublimation print across the full surface

Sublimation print on white polyester. The dog photo repeats across the full surface of the sock — from cuff to toe. Supporting motifs (dog bones, "HAF HAF" text) as background, so the sock doesn't look like an empty surface with a single face in the middle. Black heel and toe for contrast and the functional zone.

Sock construction:

  • Polyester 85 % (sublimation only works on synthetic fibres — natural fibres absorb the print on the surface and lose it after washing)
  • Elastane 15 % in the cuff and along the full length — the sock holds its shape, doesn't sag in the shoe
  • Length: standard lifestyle / sport
  • Print: sublimation, full coverage, photographic quality

Why sublimation, not jacquard

For club sport we go the jacquard route — woven logo lasts years of washing. For a dog photo it doesn't work. Jacquard works with 4–8 yarn colours on a fixed grid; a dog portrait has thousands of colour gradients, fur has subtle variations, eyes have light reflections. Jacquard would turn that into a stylised icon, not a photograph.

Sublimation transfers the image directly into the fibre — colour is part of the fabric, not a layer on top. Photographic detail stays, doesn't fade after washing (unlike direct printing where colour starts to disappear after 30 washes). Cost per pair of sublimation print is higher than classic knitting, but for B2C personalisation it's the only way to deliver a photorealistic image.

Material and print

Sublimation requires synthetic. We tried cotton — colours took, but they faded after the first wash. It's not our print; it's the chemistry of sublimation, which only bonds with polyester fibres. So polyester 85 % + elastane 15 %.

For lifestyle wear (not sport) polyester is comfortable — it doesn't absorb sweat the way cotton does, but for all-day wear in regular shoes it's fine. The dog person puts them on in the morning, gets back in the evening, throws them in the washing machine, wears them again the next day.

Process — from photo to sock

  1. Day 1 — customer uploads a photo at sufficient resolution (min. 1500 × 1500 px). We recommend a clean head shot, good lighting.
  2. Day 2–3 — we produce a mockup: showing how the photo will look on the sock template. Customer approves or asks for layout adjustments.
  3. Day 4–10 — production. Sublimation is faster than knitting but still requires precise material prep, printing, inspection.
  4. Day 11–14 — packing (each pair individually, gift-style), dispatch.

Total 2 weeks from photo upload to delivery. For Christmas or birthdays plan ahead — during holiday peak it can stretch to 3 weeks.

Result

A B2C product on the market, where the customer orders a gift for themselves or for a friend. Repeat orders after Christmas — people order a second pair for their partner, sister, mum. One customer = several dogs, several pairs throughout the year.

Main feedback: "looks exactly like him/her". That's the test it has to pass. When the dog person gets the sock and immediately laughs, that's the right moment.
